Design and Construction

Our outdoor spaces are carefully designed, produced and certified for full transparency.

Design Philosophy

Inspired by Nature

Taking nature’s design principles as our starting point, our design team has created a series of outdoor spaces that exist in harmonious balance with their surroundings.

The product design is based on the hexagon – a shape that has proven strength in nature for millennia. From beehives and turtle shells to the elegant form that protects the sea urchin – our primary source of inspiration – the hexagon recurs in strong, natural structures.

Using a biomimetic approach, where hexagons are joined into a self-supporting structure, we have developed the core geometry behind our robust, material-efficient outdoor spaces. This design enables us to produce and deliver spaces in a range of sizes to suit both spatial needs and client preferences.

The design of NJORD’s outdoor structures is based on the innovative SPACEPLATES concept, developed by Anne Romme and Anne Bagger as part of the design collective N55.

Meet the Designers

Behind the distinctive design of our outdoor spaces is an award-winning trio with deep expertise in engineering, design and architecture. Together, they developed the SPACEPLATES building concept that forms the foundation of our structures.

Anne Bagger

Engineer, M.Sc., Ph.D

Anne Bagger works as a freelance engineer, product developer and designer. As an expert in load-bearing structures, geometry and plate construction, she played a vital role in developing the technical structure.

Ion Sørvind

Artist and Designer

With a background from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Ion Sørvind has worked broadly within art and design. He is the founder of the award-winning design and art collective N55.

Anne Romme

Architect, Associate Professor, Ph.D.

Anne Romme is an architect and lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy. Her research focuses on sustainable housing inspired by natural geometries. She also founded the bachelor’s programme Finder Sted.

NJORD’s unique design is not just beautiful and tactile – it also serves a clear purpose.
The hexagonal elements create a geometric pattern with a strength not found in traditional rectangular greenhouses and outdoor structures.

Outdoor Spaces with Purpose

Our outdoor spaces are designed to offer a unique setting for people to recharge or immerse themselves – either alone or in shared moments.

Built with Care

Danish Design with a Circular Mindset

At NJORD, we consider both the present and the future. That is why environmental responsibility is naturally integrated into everything we do.

Our design philosophy is rooted in thoughtfulness and a conscious approach to materials. We use 100% recycled acrylic, and our aluminium frames are produced in a highly specialised facility in Germany—ensuring ethical standards and minimal transport. The acrylic panels are hand-cut in our own workshop in Vig, Denmark, giving us full control over finish and material waste.

Construction

Natural Strength

Inspired by the sea urchin’s thin yet strong shell, and applying an advanced plate construction principle, we merge lightness and strength in a unique design where form and function are perfectly balanced.

Ventilation

Our structures can be fitted with either automatic or manual window openers, depending on how the space will be used.

100% Recycled Acrylic

Our panels are made from acrylic – a durable and safe material with glass-like qualities.

The transparent and coloured recycled acrylic panels give our domes their unique aesthetic. But acrylic also offers other advantages. It is lighter than glass, insulates better, and is up to 20 times stronger. In case of damage, acrylic does not shatter into sharp pieces like glass – instead, it breaks into large, blunt fragments that are safer and easier to remove.

Designed for Reuse

Our structures are "designed for disassembly" with circularity in mind. They can be taken apart with simple tools. This way, you can relocate your dome, resell it, or let the materials enter a new life cycle if your needs change.

Built for the rough Nordic Climate

Despite their lightweight materials, our structures are engineered to withstand harsh weather conditions, including storms and heavy snow.

Storm and Snow Certified

NJORD is a strong choice if you need a durable outdoor space with minimal maintenance. The construction is certified storm- and snowproof, making it suitable even for exposed locations near coasts and open landscapes.

Our domes are developed in accordance with Eurocodes – the European standards for building design – meaning they are built to withstand 50-year storms. The acrylic panels and joints are tested under equivalent loads, including safety margins as specified in the standards.

Testet by Rambøll

The storm resistance calculations have been carried out with assistance from Danish engineering consultancy Rambøll. You can download spec sheets for our models below.

LCA Certified og EPD Declared

With NJORD, you get functionality, aesthetics and documented responsibility.

Full Transparency

When you choose a NJORD dome, you are not only getting a unique outdoor space – you are also getting full transparency about the product’s climate footprint. Our domes have undergone a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (Life Cycle Assessment) and received third-party certification. In 2024, they also became the world’s first domes to receive an Environmental Product Declaration (Environmental Product Declaration).

These certifications make it easier to integrate NJORD domes into DGNB sustainability assessments for larger construction projects – saving you valuable time in your documentation process.
